Former deputy president's plans to popularise 'wantam' campaign

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua,during an interview with KTN at his Karen Residence on April 7,2025.[Benard Orwongo,Standard] Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has returned to the country to a packed diary, with supporters lining up a series of events for the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader. On Wednesday, DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala said opposition leaders, led by Wiper's Kalonzo Musyoka, would welcome Gachagua at JKIA in Nairobi for a series of meetings and a roadshow in the city. He warned, however, of possible disruptions, alleging that hired goons could be used to interfere with the events. Malala said the party would lead the "mother of all peaceful processions" from JKIA to the Central Business District (CBD), culminating in a rally at the symbolic Kamukunji Grounds. "We shall have a mother of all peaceful processions from JKIA to CBD and later address a public rally at Kamukunji Grounds," Malala said, adding that police had been notified in advance to provide security for the day's activities. Embakasi North MP James Gakuya said Gachagua would focus on the upcoming by-elections, where the party is targeting at least three of the six available seats. "We will focus on the by-elections before embarking on launching the party. He is also expected to give guidance on whether there will be zoning for Opposition parties to prevent cannibalism. But as it is, we are for party democracy and even encourage parties such as DAP-Kenya to field candidates in Mbeere North," Gakuya said. A week ago, the former DP announced plans to storm President William Ruto's political stronghold of the Rift Valley to popularise his "wantam" (one-term) campaign. "I will be coming to the Rift Valley for a three-day tour to advance the one-term movement. Prepare the ground," Gachagua told his supporters over the phone. Fresh strategy Gachagua returns at a time when the government has rolled out fresh strategies to weaken his grip on the Mt Kenya region. Beyond the economic empowerment programmes spearheaded by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, two additional approaches have been launched to edge Gachagua out and strengthen Ruto's influence. Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri is leading a group of MPs in grassroots forums where residents can air grievances in a bid to reconnect leaders with the electorate. Another initiative, dubbed Jamii Imara Mashinani, brings together professionals from Mt Kenya - including Principal Secretaries, board chairpersons, directors and chief executives of state corporations - who have begun a series of meetings with locals. The first was held in Murang'a last week, where they mobilised support for the government. Gachagua is expected to pick up where he left off in July, escalating his running battles with the government.
