How Kenyans can turn optimism into lasting prosperity, resilience

Over two thousand years ago, the Bible's Book of Matthew recounts the story of three wise men on an extraordinary journey. Guided solely by a star, they embarked on a mission filled with hope, renewal and abundant promise. They believed profoundly that this guiding star signified a divine purpose - a significant turning point for humanity. Today, as I reflect on their timeless wisdom, I'm profoundly convinced that God still has a beautiful and transformative plan for Kenya - a future filled with prosperity, unity and resilience for every family. And like the wise men from the East, Kenya must also find its guiding star. To unlock the full promise of our future, our nation requires three wise champions: visionary leaders, empowered citizens and insightful policymakers. Interestingly, as I pondered this narrative of wisdom and hope, the newly released PwC Kenya CEO Survey caught my attention - a guiding star on our modern journey. Could this survey illuminate the path Kenya needs, highlighting our way toward genuine prosperity, sustainability, and lasting hope? The report reveals something encouraging: most Kenyan CEOs express optimism about the future, even amid today's challenging economic environment. More strikingly, many have embraced climate-friendly business practices not merely out of obligation but because these practices have increased their revenues, reduced costs, and strengthened their resilience. Can you imagine my sincere feeling of joy that my green sermons over the last three decades have not been in vain? They remind us clearly that sustainability isn't just good ethics - it's sound economics. Yet, optimism alone is insufficient. The ancient wisdom still resonates clearly: whatever gets measured gets accomplished. More than half of Kenya's CEOs now directly associate their personal incentives with sustainability metrics, emphasizing that accountability must accompany aspiration. Imagine the transformative impact if Kenya's policymakers were to embrace the same clarity, simplicity, and measurable commitments in policy formulation. Regulatory simplicity, bolstered by clear, measurable goals, can unlock significant economic opportunities, turning optimism into tangible progress. Adding to this hopeful narrative, Kenya recently launched its ambitious National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which I took the time to study. This strategy is not merely a technological roadmap; it is a forward-looking vision crafted to align our economic and ecological goals. AI can enable climate-smart agriculture, help manage our precious natural resources more sustainably, and deliver renewable energy efficiently. By harnessing Kenya's leading position as East Africa's digital powerhouse, we can leverage technology to uplift farmers, stabilise markets, and preserve our environment. At the heart of our collective journey lies a vibrant and growing community of citizens - a community awakening to the birth of a new Kenya. These individuals represent our greatest source of hope and resilience. They embody our nation's spirit, advocating for clear measurements of progress, accountability in leadership, and practical action in the daily lives of families and communities. After all, the lives of everyday citizens are directly shaped by our economic policies, climate action, and sustainable innovations. Today, we find ourselves at a crossroads of unprecedented opportunity and significant responsibility. CEOs envision a bright future, policymakers possess the power and tools to create transformative policies, and citizens are prepared to realise their potential. Together, we must identify our measurable goals clearly and pursue them. The wise men of old didn't merely follow a star; they chose to act with courage and decisiveness, moving forward with purpose. Let their timeless example inspire us. Kenya can justly fulfill its potential with sustainability as our guiding star, driven by the wisdom of practical measurement, accountability, and technological innovation. This is our shared moment. It's time to measure clearly, act decisively, and journey confidently toward the prosperous future within our reach. Let's move from plan to action - one wise, green, and measurable step at a time.
