A 23-year-old man from Naivasha in Nakuru County shocked members of the public on Tuesday, April 20, when he slit his throat over claims that his estranged wife had refused to reunite with him.

The man is said to have harmed himself using a broken piece of glass at the main bus terminus in Naivasha Town.

After committing the act, the man thudded against the ground while bleeding profusely. He lost consciousness a few minutes later as members of the public watched in distress.

Several minutes later, police arrived and took the victim to hospital.

The condition of the man, as of the time of publishing this story, had improved, Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru told The Standard.

Preliminary investigations reveal the man travelled from Thika in Kiambu County to Naivasha Town with the objective of winning his estranged wife back.

“When his bid failed, he broke a beer bottle that he was holding, and used one of the broken pieces of glass to harm himself,” Jacinta Wangeci, a witness privy to the incident, told The Standard.

“The man and his spouse had, shortly before the incident, been embroiled in a bitter exchange inside one of the public service matatus. I heard him threatening to commit suicide if his estranged wife won’t reunite with him,” said Wangeci.

The man’s partner, however, stood her ground, saying there was no way she would reconcile with him.

“When their argument was getting heated, we asked them to alight from the matatu and resolve their differences in a more private place. It was then that the man did the unthinkable,” added Wangeci.

Naivasha Town matatu operators’ chairperson, Stephen Mungai, told The Standard it is high time the youth were sensitised on emotional self-control.

“It is unfortunate he attempted to commit suicide over a matter that can be resolved through dialogue,” said Mungai.

Naivasha police boss, Samuel Waweru, said the man will be charged with attempted suicide once he is discharged from hospital.

The incident comes a day after a 22-year-old man in Naivasha surrendered himself to police after allegedly killing his 32-year-old girlfriend.

The suspect, a taxi driver, strangled his partner, a mother of two, over claims of infidelity.
