Harambee stars defender Joash Onyango will miss today's match against Algeria due to an ankle injury.
According to local news sources, the tough-tackling defender sustained the injury in training on Saturday and will not be included in Sunday’s squad that will play against the Desert Foxes of Algeria at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.
Goal.com reported that the Gor Mahia defender picked up the injury while preparing for Harambee Stars’ first AFCON match in 15 years.
Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa confirmed that the player will miss the Stars Sunday’s opener and the CECAFA derby tie with neighbours Tanzania.
The injury adds to Sebastien Migne’s selection nightmare after centre back Brian Mandela was recently ruled out with a knee injury that came as a result of an awkward landing in training while still in France.
The Stars’ tactician only has David Owino, Joseph Okumu and Bernard Ochieng as the only fit centre backs to call upon.
Onyango has been key to Stars’ fine qualification helping Kenya edge the Black Stars (Ghana) 1-0 at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi in March.
