Land owners along SGR Phase 2A urged to leave

Kenya Railways has called on persons affected by the construction of the Nairobi to Naivasha section of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project to vacate their pieces of land once compensated to allow for construction to go on.

According to Kenya Railways, the Government has finalised compensation to all the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) whose properties were earmarked for acquisition as they form part of the SGR corridor between Tuala area in Kajiado County and Suswa in Narok County.

The compensation process which commenced in October will see a total of 1,810 PAPs compensated for properties acquired for construction of the line and all PAPs should liaise with NLC for their payments.

Kenya Railways Acting Managing Director Philip Mainga said that the Corporation is looking forward to extending the Madaraka Express Passenger and Freight Services to Suswa upon completion of Phase 2A.

''In order to achieve this, the Corporation needs the cooperation of all the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) who should move out of the corridor to pave way for the Contractor to take possession of the land and proceed with construction latest by December 18, 2018,'' the MD said.

The Land Acquisition process which was overseen by the National Land Commission commenced in December, 2017. The Commission is in charge of disbursements of the compensation monies to the PAPs.   

The Nairobi – Naivasha section of the SGR construction dubbed SGR Phase 2A is an extension of the Mombasa – Nairobi SGR Project (Phase 1) that had been implemented by China Road and Bridges Corporation (CRBC).

The overall length of the Nairobi–Naivasha section of the Standard Gauge Railway line is 120.49 kilometers and it traverses Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Nakuru and Narok counties.

The project’s design incorporates super major long bridges;  3 tunnels;  at Embulbul in Ngong and two in Nachu area; and passenger stations in Tuala, Ongata Rongai, Ngong, Mai Mahiu and Suswa.

Construction which commenced in 2017 is at advanced stage and well on course for completion early 2019.

The Corporation projects the project will be launched in May 31. We wish to thank all PAPs for their patience, cooperation and support to the contractor for phase 2A.
