Two motorists were Thursday morning shot dead in an attack by Al-Shabaab militants in Lango la Simba area, Tana River County.

This happened during an attack staged by the terrorists who sprayed two vehicles along Garsen-Lamu road with bullets before escaping.

The affected vehicles were a lorry and salon car, which were headed for Minjila from Witu, Tana Delta OCPD Riziki Ali said.

Three other locals said they had been attacked on Wednesday night by the same gang. The men had injuries on their bodies.

This gave an indication the terrorists are still operating in the area despite intensified police operations.

On Tuesday, the militants attacked and destroyed a communication mast before burning down a meeting hall in Dabacity area, Kutulo, Mandera County.

No injury was reported during the incident that happened Tuesday night and police say the attackers escaped soon after. The group of unknown number had roamed the area for a few minutes before resorting to destroy the property, locals said. No arrest has been made so far.

North Eastern regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh said security personnel and locals heard blasts from the scene of the incident. They established there was destruction of property.

"There was an attempt but the terrorists escaped after realizing there was resistance. We have armed officers manning the masts in the area," he said.

He said they are searching for the terrorists who seem to be in operation in the vast area. This came two days after the gang killed two military personnel in an IED attack on their Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) in Damasa area. The terrorists also engaged the KDF personnel in a shootout before escaping.

Al-Shabaab terrorists have camped in the area attacking and destroying property and also killing security personnel in ambushes.

More than 50 security officers have been killed in separate attacks in North Eastern and Lamu since May. More personnel and resources are being sent to the places to fight the terrorists.
