Deputy Governor Kizito Wangalwa yesterday defied orders barring demonstrations over recent killings of night guards and a minor in Butula.

Tension was high in Butula town as officers from both regular and the administration police in riot gear kept vigil.

The deputy county boss, who was accompanied by Leader of Majority in the Assembly Josephat Wandera and MCAs, accused officers of failing to protect locals.

Addressing the Press during the demonstration, Mr Wangalwa called for the transfer of senior security agents, accusing them of under-performing and overstaying in the area.

They also called for the transfer of all security officers in Butula sub-county.

The leaders demanded a meeting with regional coordinator Mongo Chimwanga today (Thursday), failure to which they would stage daily demonstrations until their demands are met.

"We want a meeting with the national government and not junior officers. The regional coordinator must be part of that meeting or his seniors. We don't want the county commissioner or the deputy county commissioner since they are State witnesses," stated Wangalwa.

County commissioner John Chelimo had on Tuesday issued a ban on all mass demonstrations.

Mr Chelimo, who was meeting security agencies, cautioned that stern action would be taken against any individual involved in unlawful demonstration.

BUTULA KILLINGS

The county boss said investigations into the Butula killings were under way and police would not entertain lawlessness.

"The Independent Police Oversight Authority is carrying out its mandate with our officers on the ground. We have talked to the leaders and come to an agreement," said Chelimo.
