Families flock churches and amusement parks for special day

Thousands of families on Friday flocked Uhuru and Central parks in Nairobi to celebrate Christmas Day as most streets in the city remained deserted.

The Christmas mood was captured nationwide, with families flocking houses of worship and entertainment joints to mark the special day.

In Nairobi, amusement parks were packed to the brim as families turned out in their thousands to have fun.

“Today I turn a new leaf and a new chapter in my life. I thank God for this far and for his endless and priceless love to me. That is the reason I am here today to celebrate as I reflect on His love with my family,” said Regina Wambui, a mother of two.

Activities at Uhuru Park included camel and boat rides, merry go-round and bouncing castles.

Hundreds of police officers conducted patrols around the city throughout the day.

In Murang’a, holiday makers seized the opportunity to make merry as they pitched camp in various destinations.

Hundreds visited Hotel Norkas and Stanley’s Haven for a plunge in the swimming pool, as many others flocked the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine.

“We have had the best holiday as hundreds turned up to enjoy our facilities,” said Nokras Manager Michael Ndung’u.

In Kwale County, most holiday makers thronged Diani beach as others went to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at various churches.

“We should not have much pride because we think we are from special tribes. We need to know God first,” said Patricia Bosco, who preached at Diani’s redeemed church. At Ukunda showground, area MP Suleimam Dori hosted hundreds of youth recovering from drug addiction for a special Christmas party.

“Since the President launched the war on drugs here at the coast, we have seen remarkable steps. But we need to arrest those who sell drugs. I am offering Sh5,000 to any name that will be mentioned to me,” said Dori.

Residents of Budalang’i in Busia County ushered in Christmas by celebrating their annual Isambo beach carnival.

Hundreds participated in the cultural event at Marenga and Bukoma beaches on Thursday.

Activities included boat riding race, beach boxing, beach wrestling, beach volleyball, athletics, football, beauty contest, tug of war and cooking competition.
