Catholics who missed Saturday fete honour Nyaatha in Mass

Blessed Irene Stefani Nyaatha's life was not only celebrated in Nyeri but in other Catholic churches across the country.

At the Cathedral Church of Christ The King in Nakuru, a special Mass was celebrated in the fully packed church. Father Moses Muraya, who presided over the Mass, reminded Christians to emulate Nyaatha.

"Her show of compassion, humility and love for all regardless of ethnic, racial or religious divide is a lesson for all of us. Her portrayal of humility and care has seen all the leaders across the world speak well of her," said Fr Muraya.

Referring to the unfortunate cause of her death after she contracted a highly contagious disease while caring for a sick man said to have been against her and her teachings, Muraya said: "She is our model as well as a challenge to us. To dedicate ourselves to care for and love even those we hate."

The beatification itself, according to Muraya, is a big blessing in the country and a special day for everyone. Father Lawrence Mbogo, also a priest in the same church, shared the joy with Christians, saying he conducted a baptism service prior to the beatification.

"Sister Irene Stefani is an example of people who lived true faith as portrayed by all fruits of the Holy Spirit," said Fr Mbogo.

Sister Judy Mosera said, "She (Nyaatha) is an inspiration to all young people especially those called to religious life."
