EACC obtains order to search Bomet county bank account over Sh24m

BOMET, KENYA: The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has commenced investigations into corruption allegations against Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto.
Nakuru Chief Magistrate Samuel Mungai on Tuesday issued a warrant allowing EACC investigators to access documents related to a bank account at the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Bomet branch.
The account is operated by the County Government and there are allegations of a fraudulent transfer of Sh24million to the account from another operated by a defunct local authority.
According to the order issued to Mr. Agosta Mecca Mekolela, an investigator with the State agency, the sleuths have been allowed to access account No. 1143078756- belonging to the now defunct County Council of Bomet where the stated amount was transferred during the transition to devolved government.
Mr. Mekolela told the magistrate that the agency has reasons to believe that there were fraudulent circumstances involved in the transaction.
The said bank account is owned and managed by the County Government of Bomet.
It is the first step towards nailing Governor Ruto who is among those named in a list tabled in parliament last Thursday by President Uhuru Kenyatta during a State of the Nation Address.
