Kenyan MP Gideon Mwiti probe almost done, says Joseph Boinett

Kenya: A decision on whether to prosecute Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti over allegations of rape and assault is expected any time now as investigations are almost complete, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has said.

The investigators have asked Mwiti to report to Parklands Police Station this morning for further briefing on the way forward.

Police say they have almost finished gathering evidence as officers handling the case are only waiting for a DNA analysis from Government Chemist.

Mr Boinnet said yesterday they were at an advanced stage of their investigations and would make a decision on whether to charge him any time now.

“You will see action soon. The investigations are almost complete,” said Boinnet in his office.

The team of investigators comprising two officials from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) visited the scene of the alleged crime on Friday. They also visited the rape victim at home and recorded further statements from her. The 29-year old journalist was discharged from hospital on Wednesday.

The team also recorded statements from other witnesses, including a driver who took the woman home after the alleged attack on March 21.

Mwiti was also grilled for the second time on Thursday over claims of assaulting and raping the woman in his private office in Nairobi.

The fresh grilling was ordered after DPP representatives said his initial statement was not consistent and had gaps. The woman recorded a statement with police, saying Mwiti raped and assaulted her.

 ILLEGAL CLINIC

She said the incident happened in an office next to the MP’s bar in Westlands. She alleged she was forced to take an HIV test before the MP assaulted and raped her.

The doctor mentioned in the saga was also summoned for fresh grilling at the Parklands Police Station on Wednesday. He was arrested on Friday by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board and his clinic closed.

Dr David Muchiri of Fig Tree Medical Centre in Ngara, Nairobi, had appeared before the board before its members visited the clinic.

He is expected to be charged by the board today for operating the clinic illegally.

The board’s CEO, Daniel Yumbya, said Muchiri was arrested because his clinic was not licensed. He said Muchiri offers consultancy services yet he is not a consultant.

“Muchiri also has not renewed his licence,” he said.
