Evans Kidero: Drug cartels doing our work

Kenya: Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero now claims unnamed individuals are using proceeds from illicit drug trade to fund provision of social services within the city.

The governor claimed that people connected to the illegal trade have taken over the provision of services that are the preserve of the county government.

"We know that various individuals have been mentioned as drug traffickers. Nobody is asking where the money they are using is coming from. We know that in places such as Colombia, drug cartels attempt to get into positions of authority by using their money to provide services that local authorities are able to provide," claimed the governor.

He, however, declined to mention names, only citing water services as among those that have been taken over by drug cartels.

"It is surprising that Kenyans are not asking the source of these funds, yet these people are known," claimed Kidero.

Kidero, who was accompanied by Starehe MP Maina Kamanda, further warned his political detractors against early campaigns.

"There will be time for politics. This is time for delivery of services," he said.

The governor is under pressure from his critics, among them Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, who have accused him of misappropriation of funds at the Nairobi County Government.

Sonko has also accused Kidero of failing to fulfill the promises he made to Nairobi residents ahead of the last General Election.

The governor's sentiments could be seen as part of the wider Nairobi city politics in the run-up to the next General Election.

Kamanda defended the governor against claims that he was involved in corruption.

Others who attended the function were former Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, who asked Kenyans to pray for the country and its leadership.
