Cotu official escapes attack in Samburu

The Secretary General of Kenya Electrical Trades & Allied Workers Union (Ketawu), Ernest Nadome, and two other passengers narrowly escaped an ambush in Samburu County on Saturday.

The three were attacked in Mbukoi, along the Maralal-Baragoi road, by gunmen who sprayed their car with bullets.

Mr Nadome, who is also the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) deputy secretary general, was on his way home when the 6.30pm attack happened.

Nadome told The Standard by phone from Baragoi that one of the gunmen emerged from the bush and shot at them but the driver sped off, prompting more shooting.

"About a kilometre from where they ambushed us, we saw four of them running after us. We were lucky that despite having two tyres shot, the car made it to Marti Police Station," he said.

"A lorry had just passed there a few minutes before and nothing happened. I suspect they were targetting me."

Samburu Police Commandant Patrick Wambani said police were investigating the incident.

Mr Wambani asked vehicle operators to use security escorts when they travelled along such dangerous roads.

The Maralal-Baragoi road has in the recent past been synonymous with frequent attacks targeting people in public or private vehicles.
