Pastor in Magu suicide saga released on Sh2 million bail

Kenya: A pastor who was charged with aiding a suicide has been released on bail by a Kiambu court.

Pastor Ann Wambui Wanyoro was freed on a Sh2 million cash bail and a surety of a similar amount.

In his ruling, Kiambu Chief Magistrate John Onyiego said the prosecution had not provided any compelling reason to continue holding her. She has however, been ordered to report to the CID headquarters in Nairobi every Friday for the next two months. On Tuesday, Ms Wanyoro was charged with helping lawyer Paul Magu commit suicide, charges she denied.

Homicide Officer Gilbert Kitalia, who is investigating the matter, in a sworn affidavit had sought the court's permission to continue holding her in custody, arguing that she might interfere with investigations if released.

The prosecution also told the court that they have credible intelligence that unknown people have been visiting the suspect's rural home in Mang'u and her Makongeni residence in Thika and they may harm her.

The court ruled that if there are such people they should be dealt with according to the law. The magistrate also noted that the court is aware of the agony the Magu family have undergone due to the traumatising incident and the publicity the case attracted. The case will be heard on February 12 with a mention on January 21.
