The National Council of Elders has advised President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto to implement the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) report on historical injustices.
The elders said they believe the Mpeketoni attacks could be linked to the historical injustices and all the underlying issues including the runaway insecurity.
Drawn from different parts of the country, they warned that peace and security should not be politicised but instead solved professionally so as not to create tension and animosity among Kenyans.
“The Government must do thorough investigations on who planned the attacks. There are historical injustices outlined in the TJRC report and should be implemented and Kenyans encouraged to unite. Politicians should also refrain from politicising issues of peace and security,” said Pharees Rutere, the council’s chairman.
The group said terrorism activities that have left Kenyans helpless have been rampant in recent days, with the security agencies doing less to protect the lives and property of Kenyans.
They cautioned all leaders from across the political divide to desist from dividing Kenyans along ethnic lines.
