After watching his Manchester City side move to within one goal of a century for the season in mid-January, Manuel Pellegrini outlined the philosophy that he and the club want to play.

After five goals had been scored following quick-fire passing moves, City’s philosophy was fairly clear: attack.  Pellegrini emphasised that 99 was “an important amount of goals” because “when I arrive here it was very important to win a trophy but in a way that we play”. An attacking way, a non-stop attacking way “for 90-95 minutes”.

Alvaro Negredo scored either side of half-time, Edin Dzeko also struck twice while Sergio Agüero returned from injury as if he had never been away, spinning in the box to score with his second touch.  City were still attacking at the end, searching a sixth, which would have brought that landmark goal.
