Suspect wants media barred

KENYA: Suspected serial killer Harizon Okumu now wants the court to bar journalists from covering his case.

Okumu, who appeared before the High Court in Kisumu for the hearing of the case, claimed the media has given him negative publicity since he was arrested.

He told Principal Magistrate Ezekiel Obina he is not comfortable with the media covering the case after showing bias reporting on the incident.

“I feel the media should not be inside here. I feel it is harassment to me when they are in court during the hearing,” he said.

However, Obina advised him to use the right procedure in making the request.

The hearing of the case is scheduled to start on January 16 with three witnesses lined up to testify.

The accused has been in remand since August last year. He is facing murder charges after dead bodies were found buried in his compound.
