Leaders express concern over rising insecurity in Kenya

Concerns over runaway insecurity dominated Mashujaa Day speeches across the country, with leaders calling for concerted efforts to tackle the problem.

The leaders condemned the killing of a Redeemed Gospel Church pastor Charles Mathole on Saturday night and Muslim clerics two weeks ago, saying the incidents threatened security in the area. Mombasa’s acting County Commissioner Ali Mohammed regretted the killings and said police were investigating the matter.

Inciting youth

“Those behind the killings are criminals and residents and leaders should stop speculation about possible religious differences. Islam and Christianity do not condone terror,” Mohamed said. He warned religious leaders bent on inciting the youth that they would be arrested.

Addressing residents at Tononoka grounds Sunday, Mr Mohamed said government would fast track the implementation the ‘Nyumba Kumi’ programme to help monitor visitors and strengthen community policing.

“The Nyumba Kumi policy will enhance vigilance and is not aimed at invading people’s privacy as some fear,” he said.

In Kisumu, County Commissioner Lorna Odero called on the police to investigate terror threat leaflets being circulated in the county.

Ms Odero asked the public to be vigilant and help the police in promoting security in the region.

‘‘We are aware of anonymous threatening leaflets being circulated in the area. We are calling on the public to remain vigilant and the police to pursue the authors of the leaflets,’’ she said. County Governor Jack Ranguma condemned a recent incident in Muhoroni in which youths attacked a farmer in Chemelil.

‘‘There is no reason why innocent residents should be accosted by thugs and be killed. That act is unacceptable and we will follow the matter to its conclusion. I wish to condole with the bereaved family,’’ said Ranguma.

In Busia, acting County Commissioner Josephine Onunga said corruption and insecurity are some of the major challenges the county is currently facing. Onunga said the Busia community should honour those who fought for the country’s independence by ensuring security of their neighbours.
