Police in Mombasa County are investigating an incident where a politician's vehicle was sprayed with bullets on Tuesday night.

The victim, Ali Mwatsau, was heading home from a mosque at around 10pm when the incident happened in Tudor near JCC Buxton.

Mwatsau, who is aspiring to clinch the Mvita MP seat on a UDA ticket, was ambushed by gunmen in two vehicles. The gunmen sprayed his vehicle with 22 bullets.

Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata confirmed the incident saying a probe into the matter has been launched.

''So far, no one has come out to tell us what actually happened,'' said Elungata.

Mwatsau is currently receiving treatment at a Mombasa hospital.

Hassan Omar, a UDA candidate in the Mombasa Governor race, said Mwatsau sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Omar said the UDA officials were gathering more facts about the incident and making preliminary observations of their own before issuing further communication.

''As we monitor the situation, my prayers are for his quick recovery and may Allah grant strength and comfort to his family and friends. As Team Leader of UDA in Mombasa and Mr Mwatsau being one of my team members, I speak for the entire UDA fraternity in demanding a full and speedy investigation and the arrest of all the perpetrators of this heinous crime,'' Hassan said.
