Top KCPE students get Sh71.1m in bursaries

Kwale County Governor Salim Mvurya

The county government has granted bursaries worth Sh71.1 million to the best candidates in last year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

Governor Salim Mvurya said the 326 students from the county have been admitted to national schools.

"When our children are educated, we shall no longer be taken for granted. That is exactly why we are working overtime to improve standards," said the Kwale governor when he officiated the disbursement of the funds in Diani on Saturday.

The bursary funds for national school students are under the 'Elimu Ni Sasa initiative.

Addressing Form One students, their parents, teachers, leaders and other stakeholders, Mr Mvurya reiterated his government's commitment to uplifting development for Kwale residents through education.

No politics

Mvurya also challenged other leaders from the county to take up their roles responsibly instead of politicising his development initiatives.

"Instead of focusing so much on political rhetoric, I urge other leaders to also do their part in improving the welfare of our people," he said.

Deputy Governor Fatuma Achani, who was also present, assured residents that the county government will not allow any qualified student to miss out on high school due to lack of school fees.

Mr Achani also encouraged parents of qualified students who missed out in the first round of national school admission to apply for vacancies in national schools in the area.

"This is because talks were already held between Kwale's education department and the school's management for consideration of such students," she added.
