Counties have started running out of the Covid-19 vaccine after the list of people who can receive the jab was revised to include those over the age of 65.

In Nyeri County, public health facilities such as Nyeri County Referral Hospital, Mt Kenya, and Othaya Level 5 facilities reported stock-outs of the essential vaccine.

Nurses working at the county referral hospital said the number of people going for the injection had increased substantially since last weekend.

“When the vaccine arrived, we had a very low uptake, but now the number of people looking to be vaccinated is very high. The long queues start as early as 7am,” she noted.

Joseph Munyiri who was turned away from Mt Kenya Hospital, also a county government facility, said he had been advised to check if there were any vaccines at a private hospital nearby.

Nyeri Health Services Director Nelson Muriu refused to comment on the matter.

Nyeri was among four other counties that received part of 21,000 vaccines recently.
