Kiambu to build neurosurgery unit

By STANDARD REPORTER

A modern neurosurgery unit will be put up at Kiambu Hospital by the county government and the Surgical Education Foundation of Spain.

The first of its kind in the region, the unit is expected to serve Kenyans from across the country. The facility comprises an operation theatre, a four bed ICU and a 16-bed ward.

County Secretary for Health Services Manjari Mwangi said besides offering Kenyans opportunity to be treated locally, the unit would boost medical tourism.

The biggest beneficiaries of the unit will be children suffering hydrocephalus, a condition where one’s head grows abnormally huge. “The condition is becoming common and if not detected and treated early, it can lead to brain damage,” he said at a meeting with medics in the hospital.
