New police squad to be deployed in kidnap-prone region, says Kimaiyo

Murang’a County: A special flying squad police unit will be established in the crime-prone Maragua region of Murang’a County.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, while on a tour of the region, said the squad will tame the rising cases of abduction that have dogged the area in the recent past.

The new unit will boost the existing Makuyu-based flying squad in guarding the expansive county.

Kimaiyo spoke at Maragua Police Station and Mukuyu market on Friday, a day after a 100-year-old grandmother Grace Njeri and her daughter-in-law Lucy Wanja, who had been abducted, were rescued by police.

The two were found abandoned in Nginda and Kaharati areas in Murang’a South after being in the hands of abductors for two weeks.

“I am committing myself in efforts to fight the crime and restore public confidence,” said Kimaiyo.

The Government has released five vehicles to be used by the security officers in additional to the five that were earlier procured by the county government.

The public has called for transfer of officers who have overstayed in the county, claiming that they may be colluding with criminals.

Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria said there was need to improve security in the area to attract investors.

The county government, he said, will provide officers with 10 motorcycles to ensure quick response to security issues.
