Police seize over 2000 expired diapers in Nairobi

Police on Wednesday seized over 2000 expired diapers and 3 million pieces of banned plastic bags in Nairobi’s Kamukunji area.

They were packaged in bags labelled Double Vision and the owner has been identified as one John Wachira Wang’ondu.

This comes just a few months after businessman Mukhtar Rehemtulla Omar was arrested for importation and repackaging of expired diapers.

Prior to his arrest in 2018, expired diapers worth over Sh40 million were found at a go-down in Mlolongo area ready for sale.

The owner of the diapers had gone further to hire workers who placed fake KEBS stamps on the diapers.

The war on counterfeit products has intensified in recent days and just a fortnight ago, officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) raided a godown in Nairobi’s Kairobangi South Estate where they discovered expired rice being repackaged into new bags.

The new bags indicated the rice would expire in 2021.

The brand of the repackaged rice was Amar and Day to Day while the new bags were branded Red Rose and Peacock Parboil Five Star.

A recent report by the DCI revealed that a wide array of consumer goods and home appliances in retail shops could be fake.

The probe revealed that virtually all the products used daily fall short of the stipulated quality standards, hence endangering your life and exposing you to losses through purchasing fake goods packaged as genuine.
