‘Bad manners’ — Orengo slams CJ Maraga for attending Uhuru’s function

Siaya Senator James Orengo has lashed out at Chief Justice David Maraga for participating in a political gathering during President Uhuru Kenyatta's tour of Kisii County this week.

The Senior Counsel noted that it was shameful to see the CJ standing in line ‘waiting to be recognized’ as it paints a bad picture of the Judiciary.

“It is bad manners for the Judiciary…and the Chief Justice must be told. He is bringing dishonor to the courts.

“That should never ever happen in a democratic constitutional country which has three arms of government which are equal,” said Orengo.

His sentiments were echoed by Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula who reminded the CJ that he represents the whole country and not Kisii region.

“When I heard the Chief Justice saying that he is happy that the executive has come to bring development to his homeland…he is not the Chief Justice of Kisii.

“He is the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya,” he remarked.

Wetangula added: “If you go to England, the ordinary man does not know who the CJ is…you meet the CJ in his judgements or in court.”

At some point, Maraga was spotted standing in a crowd as Deputy President William Ruto made his address and the senators expressed their displeasure saying he should not be seen in such gatherings.

The Head of State was in Kisii to open the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital and the event was attended by various politicians including NASA leader Raila Odinga, Kisii Governor James Ongwae and Senator Sam Ongeri among others.

The Judiciary is yet to issue a statement on the matter but the legislators plan to pay the CJ a visit and caution him.
