What next for University Student Unions?

AFTER THE EXIT OF POINTMAN BABU OWINO

Since the long gone days of Orengo Miguna and Mwandawiro student leadership has been very vibrant in Kenya particularly the University of Nairobi as well as Kenyatta University not forgetting the lakeside Maseno University. But all this could be thrown into a limbo following the exit of strong point some months back.

Some chose to focus on national politics while others might have moved to greener pastures. The one time strongest SONU that even dated to register itself as a political party is now let's say as good as dead this is after the exit of Babu Owino who is now Embakasi East MP, on the other hand, Kenyatta university KUSA union is also healing wounds of the departure of the eloquent Were Were who is presumed to have earned a new office with his county government of Kisumu.

WHAT NEXT?

Following the laws passed by parliament last year that reduced students governance into a delegates only conference has led to emergence of non prepared non brave and less spoken leaders this came out clearly when the Kenyatta University held it's election for the first time under the new laws that Saw vibrant leaders like Morara David being suspended for pulling heavy crowds and agitating for the rule of many.

What of SONU

The University of Nairobi is yet to hold it's election under the new constitution but sources state that students are bound to resist the new method of elections various vibrant candidates are on the lineup including the now SONU secretary General Apiyo JF keno Manwar Daphine Githuku and Jamal Birkan.

Ndege Fredrick a respected general In student politics who also turns out to be the Embakasi East constituency Coordinator and a great Ally of Babu Owino have time and again stated that Apiyo and Jamal are the best suits for chairman and Secretary General respectively.

It's a wait and see situation for that. All eyes are set on SONU as it serves as a speaking tool for almost all universities.
