Hilarious tweets as Kenyans react to former Speaker Marende's replacement as Kenya Power Chair

Kenyans on social media have responded to Kenya Power’s move to replace former Speaker Kenneth Marende’s chairmanship with Engineer Mahboub Maalim Mohamed. The announcement on Tuesday 9 January left many accusing the government of ‘playing’ Speaker Marende.

Engineer Mohamed is a former Permanent Secretary in Ministry of State for Special Programmes in Office of the President. He was elected in December to the Board by the Company’s shareholders during the Annual General Meeting.

During the elections conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Mr. Marende polled a paltry 2,323,366 votes, behind Mrs. Zipporah Jesang Kering finished third with 978,692,508.

The top two candidates were Mr. Mahboub Maalim Mohamed who garnered 979,253,302 votes to finish top ahead of Mr. Adil Khawaja who garnered 978,978,742 votes.

Before his election, Mohamed served as a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and as an Executive Director at Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD). He was also an ambassador to the IGAD. AMb (Eng.)

He holds M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in Civil Engineering from Texas A&I University in the United States of America. He is registered engineer with the Kenya Engineers’ Registration Board and a member of the Institute of Engineers of Kenya. Mohamed has also served in various positions in the World Bank.

According to a statement by the Board, Engineer Mohamed brings to the company’s leadership a wide range of local and international experience in public service and corporate governance.

Speaker Marende who was known for his strong support for National super alliance (NASA) was among a host of leaders drawn from the Luhya community who trooped to State House, Nairobi after the Supreme Court nullified the August 8 presidential election to declare their support for President Kenyatta’s re-election.

Kenyans on Twitter took the news rather strongly. Here are some of their comments;
