Today I hit a biker. I had just engaged my fifth gear, overtook a bike (bodaboda carrying a man on top of a cow feeds sack). I remember thinking; these guys are not serious...now I was maneuvering a bend and descend into town.

I was doing a clean 80km/h. My shamba KAM Hilux has only once, at 11.30pm done 120km/h, alone on the highway and so late to get home, I didn't realize I pressed so hard on the accelerator, the only thing that reminded me was those 90's alarms that were installed in the then vehicles to warn you if you did 110km/h.

Today was different, the sun was hot, my windows were rolled down, I didn't have any thought at the time. The music was not playing loudly either. I was just easing slowly at an average speed of 80

On my right to the roadside, there was a parked silver sedan.

Suddenly crossing from right to left just behind the parked sedan, whooshed a yellow Dayun sports bike.

There was a sharp screeching of rubber against tarmac, as I tried to slow and swav around him, then a loud explosive bang rented the air.

I halted 100 meters ahead, hurriedly left my Hilux pick up by the road side, went back to see the Biker. He, one shoe off, I thought mustn’t be okay, shoes coming off at accident scenes are not usually good news.

I saw him on his feet, thank God, but he had a cracked scalp, Bleeding, confused, limping. It was not good at all.

His bike had been pulled aside by road users. The only evidence around there was my skid brake marks, his side mirror, LCD dashboard, yellow side covers and his blood.

Immediately I thought of myself in that situation, I felt so sad for the guy, see, I also ride, not a speed bike but my convenient ‘souped’ up Jingchen 125.

I am not saying I did a very good thing, I tried my best to avoid him, maybe I should have been doing 79km/h or 65, he, on the other hand, should not have assumed I would slow down(if he had seen my pickup) or just cross a busy highway without checking if there was any oncoming motorist.

So I told him we must go to the hospital, then go to report to the traffic police, just mentioning the name police the guy went mad.

He just took off, went to his bike started it and off into the maize he disappeared.

The police told me even if I had been on the wrong (I was not) he still would not have won the case. He had no helmet, no reflector, no protective gear and probably no license or insurance.

How many more lives are we going to loose on the road due to negligence? What happened to protect our precious bodies?

If you are a biker, please invest. Invest in safety. If you know a biker, please let them know life is precious, let them invest in safety.
