Embu University College to gain from Sh13m lab equipment

Embu University College is set to receive scientific equipment worth Sh13 million. This is in a bid to strengthen the quality of the science course it offers. The institution is among 16 universities that will benefit from apparatus donated by Seeding Labs’ 2016 Instrumental Access programme, a US-based non-profit organisation.

The organisation makes high quality laboratory equipment and supplies to university departments. Dr Romano Mwirichia, a scientist in the department of biological sciences, said the award was a culmination of a rigorous screening process in which 67 universities had applied. “The applicants outlined the details of their department’s research and the equipment needed to remove barriers to scientific discovery and education,” he said.

He said Seeding Labs recognised 16 outstanding university departments in 11 countries. He said the equipment would be delivered in July, coincidentally around the same time when the institution, a constituent college of University of Nairobi, is set to receive a charter.

He said the university had got equipment worth Sh2.3 million from a German organisation last year.
