University closed following students’ riot

Chuka University has been closed indefinitely following chaos sparked by disputed student elections. The university administration took the drastic step yesterday afternoon after students went on the rampage, destroying property after they disagreed on the outcome of Students Council elections.

They barricaded the Meru-Nairobi road, destroyed school and private property before torching a university bus. Students allied to a poll loser claimed the election was rigged.

Police fired teargas to disperse the rowdy students. Over 10 students were arrested.

A student who sought anonymity for fear of victimisation said the students claimed a certain tribe was favoured.
