NBK injects millions into Chemususu Dam Half Marathon to boost conservation and talent development

[Courtesy] The Chemususu Dam Half Marathon, a sustainability initiative aimed at conserving the Chemususu Dam catchment and promoting local talent, received a significant boost with the National Bank of Kenya (NBK) injecting Sh3 million into the 2024 edition. The marathon, scheduled for November 16, 2024, in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County, is expected to attract over 3,000 participants. NBK's sponsorship aims to support the enhancement of the dam's catchment, create environmental awareness, and help develop the athletic potential in the region. Speaking at the cheque handover, NBK Managing Director George Odhiambo emphasized the bank's commitment to sustainability and community-driven initiatives. "NBK is delighted to be part of this year's marathon. I believe that through sports, we can bring people together and inspire them to lead active lives. We are committed to seeing every good cause come to fruition. This sponsorship will not only aid the conservation of the dam but will also benefit the people of Eldama Ravine and Baringo County," said Odhiambo. The Chemususu Dam Half Marathon, now in its ninth edition since its inception in 2014, has grown into a major event on the athletics calendar. This year's competition will feature four races, with the highlight being the 21 km half marathon. In addition, there will be a 10 km elite race for both men and women, a corporate challenge, and a special veterans' category for participants aged over 50. Eldama Ravine MP Musa Sirma welcomed NBK's support, praising the marathon's dual focus on conservation and athletic development. "We are delighted to have NBK on board for this year's event. The conservation of Chemususu Dam is a key priority as it directly benefits over 500,000 people. This marathon also provides a platform for our youth to nurture their athletic talents," said Sirma. Athletics Kenya Baringo Chairman Benard Kitilit underscored the unique community engagement efforts that accompany the marathon. "This marathon stands out because of the year-round community initiatives we undertake. Our goal is to ensure the sustainability of the local environment and grow athletes who will eventually represent Kenya on the world stage," Kitilit remarked. With participation expected from across the country and beyond, the Chemususu Dam Half Marathon continues to establish itself as a vital event for promoting environmental conservation and developing athletic talent in Kenya.
