Brookside gives school games players reason to smile

[Jonah Onyango, Standard] The stage is set for this year's Brookside Secondary Schools National Term One games that begin on Tuesday at Shanzu Teachers College and Shimo La Tewa High School, Mombasa. Sponsors Brookside Dairy yesterday launched the games at the Ministry of Education offices, Nairobi. Over 1,200 students will be battling it out in rugby 15s, basketball, hockey, handball, athletics, cross country and swimming. Teams will also be hunting tickets to this year's Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) that the country will host in August. Brookside, which has supported the games for the past 22 years, reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing sports talent in the country by sponsoring this year's championship to the tune of Sh30m. Of the total sum, Sh21.5m was directed to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) for kitting all players, trophies and certificates, while the balance will cater for logistical needs during the games and branding. Speaking during the launch, Brookside Dairy Corporate Communications Manager Wilson Okong'o said Brookside is proud to be associated with the games. "We take pride in identifying with an event that serves to bring out and nurture the sporting prowess of our youth even as we seek to mainstream healthy lifestyles such as consumption of quality milk as a prerequisite to excellence in sports," Okong'o said. "By providing each participant with two pairs of playing kits, we take delight that every player in these games enjoys a measure of equity and sense of belonging irrespective of their institutions," he added. Okong'o noted that through the sponsorship, Brookside is playing its corporate citizenship role which gives talented students a platform to showcase their talent. "We are confident that with our investment, the Brookside Term One games will continue to provide a perfect launching pad for careers in sports by harnessing talent in various sports disciplines," he added. Head, Directorate of Field Co-ordination and Co-Curricular Activities Nelson Sifuna emphasised the importance of sports in schools. "This partnership with Brookside marks yet another milestone in our collective effort to promote sports, education and holistic development among our young learners," Sifuna said. Sifuna lauded Brookside Dairy for its unwavering support saying that it's key in nurturing talents in schools. "On behalf of the Ministry of Education, I extend my gratitude for their generous support which includes kitting students will go a long way in enhancing participation, boosting morale and fostering excellence in schools." Participants from all regions will arrive in Mombasa on Saturday to acclimatise in readiness for the championship. Rugby 15s, handball and basketball will be played at Shimo La Tewa, while athletics, hockey and selected handball matches will be at Shanzu Teachers College. Swimming will be staged at Aga Khan Academy on Thursday and Friday.
