Champions Uasin Gishu County will be out to defend the overall title when 47 counties converge in Mombasa for the third edition of the County Assemblies Sports Association (CASA) games, which starts on Monday.

County representatives started arriving in Mombasa yesterday where over 10,000 participants are set to participate in 21 disciplines from Monday to Saturday at several designated venues.

Association Chairman Peter Imwatok of Nairobi County flanked by his executive members and Mombasa County Assembly Sports Chairman Tobias Sumba said the games whose theme “harnessing the power of sports and culture in reigniting hope and restoration in times of crises” were not held last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We shall not allow spectators in the games as a way of observing the pandemic protocols released by the ministry of health,” said Imwatok.

“This theme is particularly in line with the current challenges the country has faced with the implications of the Covid-19 pandemic for the past two years which has resulted to loss of employment, economic depression and loss of lives.”

Even as Imwatok thanked the Ministry of Health for giving them permission to hold the event he urged the participants to adhere to the Covid-19 guidelines and protocols.

“Sports in society reminds us that keeping time pays, that following prescribed rules does not have to be boring and that we must always have a place for fun in our lives. Sports and culture can foster peace, promote oneness and define identity,” he added.

Sumba said the participants will compete in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere.
