Redemption moment for Shujaa at London 7s

Shujaa will be hoping to put behind their recent struggles at the World Sevens Rugby ahead of today's London Sevens-the eighth leg of the series-at Twickenham Stadium.

The former Singapore Sevens champions performed poorly during last weekend’s Toulouse 7s in France where they collected one point after registering one win in their six matches.

Shujaa failed to proceed through to the quarterfinals for the fifth time in a row.

Interestingly, since the beginning of the year, Kenya has not gone past the group stage after poor results in Malaga, Seville, Singapore, Vancouver and Toulouse.

Even with new coach Damian McGrath in charge, Shujaa are nowhere near their best.

In London, McGrath's boys will have to bring their A-game after being drawn in a tricky Group B that consists of Toulouse 7s finalists Ireland, series leaders Argentina and second-placed South Africa. 

Shujaa who have managed just a point in the last two events and have dropped to 12th on the standings will be keen to improve to move into a respectable position.

Kenya kick off their campaign with a match against Ireland at 12.16pm before facing Argentina at 3pm. Their final group match will be against South Africa at 6.08pm.

Meanwhile, Kenya Simbas who lost their fourth Currie Cup match last weekend will be seeking to redeem themselves when they play their last match in South Africa against SWD Eagles at City Park Stadium, Athlone before heading back home to Nairobi.

Kenya have now played five matches where they have won only one and lost four.

Kenya will make history next month when they host two Currie Cup Division One matches in Nairobi.

The Simbas lost their opening three matches against Falcons 51-14 on April 9 before going down to Zimbabwe 22-21 on April 23 and Griffons 66-33 on April 30.

A 35-12 win over Border Bulldogs on May 7 sprung the team back to life before being given a reality check by Boland Cavaliers last weekend in a 45-33 defeat.

Paul Odera's charges will take on Leopards on June 4 before meeting Eastern Province Elephants on June 11 at the RFUEA Ground.

Kenya Simbas and Zimbabwe Goshawks are using the Currie Cup to prepare for the Africa Rugby qualifying tournament to the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The qualifiers will take place in the French cities of Marseille and Aixen on July 1-10 this year.

Locally, KCB will be seeking to win their second National Sevens Circuit as Christie Sevens starts at RFUEA Ground today.

KCB, who are Christie 7s holders, are fresh from winning last weekend's Kabeberi Sevens.

The bankers will battle with Topfry Nakuru, hosts Kenya Harlequin and Pirates in Group A.

Strathmore Leos will play Daystar Falcons, Blak Blad and Impala in Group B as Homeboyz face off with the 2014 champions Mwamba, Western Bulls and Catholic Monks, who won the Division II title at Kabeberi Sevens in Group D.

Kabras Sugar will renew their rivalry with Menengai Oilers in the ‘Rai Derby’ in Group C which also consists of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and Nondescripts.
