Eldoret businessman alleges death threats from in-laws amid ongoing assault case

A court gavel. (Courtesy) An Eldoret-based businessman, Ibrahim Sidik Abdullatik, is seeking protection from the government, claiming his life was in danger. Ibrahim, who is embroiled in a controversy between him and his in-laws over an ongoing assault case in an Eldoret court, claims he is being constantly trailed by unknown vehicles during the day and night. "I sincerely want to make obvious to the public that my life is in danger. Some people have been following me with an intention to harm me. Things have become difficult; I can transact my business during the day for fear of being abducted," Abdullatik said. He alleged that he has been receiving constant threats over his life from a section of his in-laws after he disclosed sensitive information to the police about them. The embattled businessman says that his in-laws want him to withdraw the matter pending before the Chief Magistrate's court in exchange for his peace and harmony. In the criminal case that is before Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan, the businessman's in-laws are accused of causing grievous bodily harm contrary to section 251 of the penal code. The charge against the accused persons, namely, Omar Mohammed, Khalid Omar, Asif Umar, and Tawqir, is that they beat Ibrahim Sidik Abdullatik, causing actual bodily harm to him. They committed the said offence on April 22, 2022, at Elgon View estate in Uasin Gishu County. Abdullatik says he has reported the claims and written statement at Eldoret police station under OB/No39 dated 29/5/23. "Don't take this for granted; I am still surviving on the mercies of God, and that is why I have made the appeal to the government to provide me with adequate security without further delays before any harm to my body," he argued. Ibrahim expressed fear he may be hurt or killed as a result of the ongoing criminal case he has filed against a family where his son has married a wife. The two families have been involved in a four-year-old court battle after an assault case that he filed against the father of his daughter-in-law, Omar Mohammed, alongside three other family members. "This is a serious criminal matter that should not be taken lightly because I can't move freely with all these threats, and for that reason I have copies of letters written to different government entities and human rights bodies requesting protection, but there has been no action. I did know why," he asked. He added, "Some time back I had agreed to settle the matter out of court, but they were adamant. If they are really genuine, why don't they want to obey the court process instead of threatening and giving me a sleepless situation?" he posed. Uasin Gishu County Criminal Investigations Officer Daniel Muleli said the case was already in court awaiting determination. "Let him wait for the response from the court; once the complaints are brought, we investigate and later take it to court for determination, and that's what we did," Mulali said.
