Three people died after two vehicles collided along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway in Gilgil.

Gilgil Sub County Police commander John Onditi said that the accident involved a private car bound for Nairobi and a 14-seater matatu heading towards Nakuru.

"The private car was speeding at the Gilgil junction when the driver lost control of it and rammed into a matatu heading in the opposite direction," said Onditi.

The sub-county police boss explained that three people died on the spot while others were rushed to the hospital with injuries.

"The car had five people on board. Three passengers died upon impact. The driver and one passenger survived with injuries," said Onditi.

He added that the two survivors from the saloon car and two other passengers on board the matatu are recuperating at the Gilgil Sub County Hospital.

"Bodies of the three have been removed to the Gilgil Sub County Hospital mortuary while the wreckage has been towed to Gilgil Police Station," said Onditi.

He warned motorists using the highway against speeding and to observe traffic rules to avert such tragedies.
