One person has died and six others injured after a 14-seater matatu collided head-on with a trailer at Salgaa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway on Sunday evening.

According to witnesses, the matatu headed to Nakuru was overtaking another truck when the two vehicles rammed into each other head-on.

Nominated MCA Rachel Maru, who witnessed the crash, said that they managed to rescue other passengers who were rushed to Nakuru Level Five Hospital.

Residents have called on motorists plying the route to be more cautious, saying many accidents are reported along the stretch between November and December.

Bernard Sigei, a resident called on the government to fast track the expansion of the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway to reduce accidents.

Sigei said most of the accidents occur as motorists attempt to overtake on the two-lane busy highway.

Heavy traffic followed before the police towed the wreckage to Rongai Police Station.
