Koitalel family seeks Sh54m for mausoleum

By Rael Jelimo

Koitalel arap Samoei’s family is demanding to know the whereabouts of Sh54 million set aside by former President Mwai Kibaki’s regime to complete the freedom fighter’s mausoleum in Nandi Hills town.

The money was channelled through the Culture and Sports ministry, then forwarded to the National Museums of Kenya, but it did not reach the incomplete mausoleum.

“We appeal to the national and county government to assist the Koitalel family to trace this money. The mausoleum is in dilapidated condition and not fit for a hero of Koitalel’s calibre,” said David Sulo, the Koitalel family co-ordinator and spokesperson.

He said the family and the Nandi community felt cheated after Kibaki made it public that the money would be given only for it to “disappear”.

Sulo called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to intervene in the matter and launch investigations into the missing cash.
