Anxiety as unknown beast mauls livestock

NANDI, KENYA- An unidentified animal continues to wreak havoc in Nandi with the killing of ten more livestock.This brings the number killed to 22 as a search for it continues.

The wild animal killed three cattle, five sheep and two goats between Monday and Saturday last week at Tulon and Chepterit villages in Nandi Central District.

The animal had killed a total of ten sheep and goats and two cows in the same villages in the past.

Speaking to The Standard over the weekend, farmers who had experienced the losses expressed frustrations with the animal and decried their losses.

Mr Abraham Kogo, a local farmer, said there was a general fear that the animal would kill more livestock following unsuccessful bids to hunt down the beast.

“There are about 100 cattle that have been wounded by the animal,” he said.

The mystery animal pulls out cattle’s tails from the base at the hindquarters leaving deep wounds.

“There is no sign of a tough struggle between the animal and the attacked cattle and we believe that the wild animal must be swift in its action,” said Mr Kogo.

The farmers termed the animal “tactful and mysterious”, saying that even after spending nights hunting for it, it keeps evading their traps.
