Even if proposal ceremonies vary, we automatically think of it as a man's responsibility. Recently women have decided to take charge and be the ones to propose hence the popularity of shows such as 'Marry Me Now,' where it is the women who propose marriage. This is still a very new concept so there is still some hesitation if you should or shouldn't ask your hubby-to-be (hopefully) to spend the rest of his life with you. The first step is being sure that he is open to the idea of being proposed and that he is ready to move on to the new stage of marriage. If you're sure his mind is made up and it is you he wants to spend the rest of his life with, here is how you can go about it without looking like a clown: Starts working on your self-confidence Everyone has the right to make their own decisions when it comes to relationships even if it means proposing to a man. But since this isn't the norm, it might be hard to actually go through with it. There is the issue of being stigmatized and ridiculed which is a real challenge for ladies who would wish to propose. You can prepare yourself by building your confidence so that your man can also feel that boldness in your decision when you propose to him. Pick a special date Being spontaneous is very unique in its own way but it would also be nice to actually pick a date that just makes sense. It wouldn't feel as memorable proposing to him on a random day because he might not be in the mood for surprises. Choose a special date like a holiday, your anniversary or a day when he's off from work so that he will be relaxed at least and in good spirits. Build your self-confidence first and be open to the fact that he could say yes or no (Photo: iStock) Choose a comfortable location Choose a location where you know he will be comfortable. If he likes a particular restaurant or park, you can plan to propose there. It might also be a great idea to choose somewhere private if you're not sure how he will react. This is better because it will help him feel less pressured and in case he rejects the idea, it will be less embarrassing for you. Decide if you will need a ring The ring is the main highlight of every proposal. However, this is a different type of proposal so you need time to decide if he will want a ring or whether you should get him a different gift instead. If for example, he has ever mentioned that he would prefer a cuff bracelet instead of a ring if someone proposed to him, take note and go with that instead. Whatever option you choose, make it special for him. Let your speech be natural No proposal is fully complete without a mini-speech. You don't have to say so many words because it's what you say that actually matters. The best way to do it is to let the speech flow out naturally. Let him know how much he means to you and fingers crossed, he will say yes!
