Bathrooms should be spaces where one not only scrubs down their body but a space that is rejuvenating with hygienic, cohesive and harmonious interiors.

A large surface area item that could change the ambience of your bathroom is a shower curtain. This not only prevents water from splashing on the floor but is an effective way of adding a focal point of colour, texture and shape to your bathroom.

There are many bright, multi-coloured shower curtains made from water repellent fabrics such as nylon, vinyl or polyester that will fit your interiors.

Most of the shower curtains are relatively inexpensive, making it possible to have two different themed shower curtains for those days when you need an instant change or fit.

Basics

Before you buy a shower curtain, measure the length of the rod and the wall.

Shower curtains come in various sizes, depending on the shape of your bathroom, from cube-shaped shower stalls to extra wide ones with additional space along the bathtub.

A lightweight shower curtain is easily blown away when showering, leaving the floor and tub flooded with water.

A heavier or thicker shower curtain, often with magnetic weights at the bottom, will ensure that the curtain stays in place and water drains within the limited surface area.

With just soap, a sponge and warm water and occasional sun drying, a synthetic shower curtain is also easy to clean.

Select a themed pictorial shower curtain such as one with marine or seashells which may be clear or opaque, single-coloured or printed.

Of course a clear shower curtain will provide little privacy should the door be accidentally opened while you are in the shower.

Select colours to either match or contrast the tiles in the bathroom.

If your bathroom has all white or neutral coloured tiles, then inject some colour by painting a section of a wall, such as the section above the tile, and then develop your theme colour from there.

 Avoid accidents

To avoid accidental slips during and after a shower, place plastic suction mats at the foot of the bathtub or floor of the shower and one in the area where you step out of the bath.

The latter could also have a floor mat, which can be in matching colours to your shower curtain.

Reinforce the colour scheme by accessorising the rest of your bathroom with matching decorative yet functional items such as towels, toothbrush holders and toilet mats for cohesive and harmonious interiors that will leave you both refreshed and rejuvenated.
