Kahawa Sukari is a sweet, serene hood formerly a coffee plantation (sukari farm). It is situated off Thika Road, opposite Kenyatta University and nestled between Juja and Githurai estates.

This former British Air base in the colonial times is known to be home to several high-ranking government officials, retired and serving army personnel and university dons.

Its lush, green environment and tranquillity provides a perfect ambiance for families aspiring to construct their own versions of ‘dream homes’. This is evident from the number of homes constructed in state-of-the-art architecture similar to Spanish Haciendas and 19th century Victorian mansions.

Approximately 20km from the city centre, it takes just about half an hour to get there. The area is well serviced by public transport with fares ranging from Sh40-Sh80 depending on time of day.

There is a well-maintained tarmac road — the Kahawa Sukari Avenue, running across the estate, dividing it into two. Several all-weather feeder roads branch from the Kahawa Sukari Avenue leading into mini estates.

Security

The estate is well manned by private guards who monitor movement of residents and visitors. It is mandatory for non-residents to clearly state their host.

Kahawa Sukari shopping centre is among the first buildings you notice when you get into the estate. This centre has prospects of expanding especially with the completion of Thika Road highway.

Life here is affordable unlike other posh areas. A single room goes for Sh6,000, while a one-bed room house fetches Sh8,500 and a two bed room goes for Sh20,000 a month. Entertainment lovers will be spoilt for choice with hotspots such as Comfy Inn, Pint Makuti and Engen fast food among others.

Kahawa Sukari residents and plot owners’ association ensures the smooth running of affairs in the estate. The association is open to all residents who pay Sh500 every month for security and maintenance.

A quarter of an acre in the non-prime areas goes for nothing less than Sh3 million and one can buy a similar portion in the prime area near the Thika Road highway for Sh8 million, that is if you are lucky.
