Meru Museum simplifies crocodile rearing

MERU, KENYA: Farmers who wish to rear crocodiles will soon get eggs from the Meru Museum after arrival of new crocodiles.

Meru Museum Curator in charge Cornelius Njeru said they will supply eggs to local farmers who are licensed to rear crocodiles.

There are several crocodile farms in Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties who will no longer have to travel out to look for the eggs or young crocodiles, the official said.

Mr Njeru said a male Nile crocodile had already arrived to replace one which died of old age recently.

Njeru said they had finalised logistics of transporting a female Nile crocodile from Nairobi to Meru.

“The male crocodile has been delivered so now we are bringing a female one. They are juveniles and had been together in Nairobi. The other one (in Nairobi) is lonely but should arrive in Meru by Thursday,” Mr Njeru said on Tuesday.

The Meru Museum which is located in Meru Town was recently upgraded and more animals brought in.

The museum has snakes, baboons and traditional artefacts among its attractions.

There are also the Ameru community traditional huts in the compound located metres from the County Assembly.
