Governor Kidero asks minister not to renew plot leases around markets

NAIROBI, KENYA: The Nairobi County governor Dr Evans Kidero has asked his minister for Lands, Housing and Physical Planning not to renew expired plot leases around markets that are meant to be upgraded in the county.
He said this yesterday as he toured the Ngara market where traders complained of inequity in the charges compared to traders in other parts of the county.
The area member of parliament Maina Kamanda who had accompanied the governor said the traders had complained of exorbitant charges to the county government to which Dr Kidero said he would work with his finance minister to have the traders pay not more than Sh150 per week.
"There is a constitution and it calls for equality. There has to be equity in the charges and we will work on seeing that you do not pay more than Sh150 per week," he said to the traders.
Kamanda said there was need for leaders to work together, a sentiment Dr Kidero agreed with adding that leaders needed to offer the services they were elected in office to offer.
"Devolution is meant to bring the services closer to the people and we will ensure we offer services we are meant to give," he said.
