State prepares for national electronic payment system

Kenya: It will soon be possible for the public to make cashless payments when seeking for services from any Government ministries, departments or agencies. This will happen when the State rolls out an electronic payments platform for the public sector.

The idea is to make the country a cashless economy, a trend that is already being pushed by several commercial banks and other private sector players. National Treasury, Interior and National Co-ordination and Devolution and Planning ministries, Central Bank and Information and  Communication Technology Authority are working on modalities for setting up the National Payment Gateway.

The Government is already using the Postal Services platform, through the Huduma centres, as an access point to State products and other public services.
