Why EACC is after four governors

Three governors could soon be arraigned in court if the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) adopts investigations report of the anti-graft body, it has emerged. The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) yesterday said files for the three sitting and one former county bosses have been presented to the DPP for review. EACC Chief Executive Abdi Mohamud said that the DPP will review and give directions on the prosecutions. DPP Renson Igonga, however, did not comment on the EACC report. It also emerged that two former Cabinet Secretaries and 11 former governors are presently under active investigations by the ethics body. Mohamud spoke during the briefing on the Status on Investigations, Asset Recovery and the Fight Against Corruption. He said the files have been presented to the DPP but did not reveal the 11 counties under investigations. "These investigations relate to allegations of embezzlement of public funds, conflict of interest, money laundering, and possession of unexplained wealth," EACC boss Abdi Mohamud said. Overall, Mohamud said EACC has completed 89 high profile cases. "In order to address irregular recruitment, manipulation of payroll and payments of irregular allowances, embezzlement of mortgage and car loan funds at the counties, the commission is actively pursuing cases worth approximately Sh1.6 billion involving 822 county officials," he said. It also emerged that EACC has forwarded to the DPP findings on irregular award of tenders at the Roads department to a tune of Sh70 million between November, 2017 and August, 2021 in one the cases. The commission has also recommended the prosecution of some former senior officials and contractors in connection with the scam. Also lined up for prosecution are directors of various companies owned by the brothers of the former governor and his close associates. Other cases involve a Sh1.2 billion and a Sh152 million tender scandals in two counties. "These investigation files have been submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), with recommendations to prosecute 82 of the cases," the EACC boss added He however noted that the commission is not currently probing Members of Parliament over the recent revelations that some were receiving bribes during the committees. "We are investigating about seven cases of Constituency Development Funds misuse projects. But if we get information that there are those who are receiving bribes, then we will investigate. For now, we don't have any evidence," said Mohamud. He, however downplayed reports that the commission was pursuing National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, noting that it was a hoax that started from social media.
