Ndindi Nyoro suffers double blow, axed from Budget committee in reshuffle

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has taken over from Leah Sankaire in the Diaspora Affairs and Migrant Workers Committee. [File, Standard] Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro is yet again on the receiving end of the United Democratic Alliance's (UDA) fury after he was on Tuesday kicked out of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee. Nyoro, a former ally turned critic of the President William Ruto regime, was dewhipped and replaced by Mathioya MP Edwin Mugo in recent committee changes moved by UDA majority whip Sylvanus Osoro and announced by Speaker Moses Wetangula. The youthful lawmaker was allocated the Diaspora affairs committee where he took up the position previously occupied by the Kajiado Woman rep Leah Sankaire. "That, further to the resolution of the House of Wednesday, 5th March 2025, and Thursday, 6th March 2025, appointing members to various committees and pursuant to the provisions of standing order 175, this House further approves the appointment of the following members to the respective committees as specified hereunder," said Wetang'ula. Nyoro's reshuffle comes just months after his position as the Budget and Appropriations committee chairperson was given to Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi back in March. Atandi landed a role following the formation of the broad-based government that saw former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua allies kicked out from influential committees in favour of those that support the so-called broad-based agenda. While the Kiharu MP was not a Gachagua ally, he was ousted from the helm of the House team for what was termed as being a "fence-sitter" as during the voting on Gachagua's impeachment, he abstained. And since his fall out with the current administration, Nyoro has been heavily criticising the Ruto-led regime. Last week, the MP accused the government of its decision to secure a Sh44.7 billion bond issued by Linzi Finco to fund the construction of the Talanta Sports Stadium. The 60,000-seater Talanta Sports Complex is expected to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Nyoro warned that the move could swamp the country with debt and end up costing Kenyans a staggering Sh100 billion by the time of the maturity of the loan. "Every child born in the next 15 years will have a loan tag for money they have no idea how it was used," he said. A week prior, he also took the Kenyan Kwanza administration, accusing it of being responsible for the increase in fuel price due to its opaque and potentially unconstitutional government borrowing practices. He claimed that the securitization of fuel levies and excessive taxation by the current government had driven up fuel prices. Nyoro further lamented the alleged abuse of the tax policy, which he said was the country's best bet in dealing with the unpredictable fuel prices. Changes were also effected in the Constitutionality Implementation and Oversight Committee (CIOC), where Lamu West MP Stanley Muthama was placed by Njoro MP Charity Kathambi. On her part, Kathambi will be transitioning to the Committee on Implementation where she will replace MP Muthama. Homa Bay Woman Representative Joyce Bensouda won big after she was appointed to the Blue Economy committee where she will fill the slot previously held by the late MP Ongondo Were. Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, will now serve at the Departmental committee on labour, where she will replace Nakuru Women representative Liza Chelule. Consequently, Chelule will proceed to serve on the committee on Regional Development, replacing Mary Emaase. Wamaua is a major beneficiary of the committee's shake-up, with her placement in the labour committee being viewed as a reward for her newfound loyalty to President Ruto. She was previously a staunch Gachagua ally but shifted camps in April. "From time to time, the committee on selection sits to review the allocation and reallocation of members to several committees, considering several factors including regional balancing, gender and expertise. There's no particular committee that is superior to the other and members are advised that whenever these committees are proposed, members should take advantage of participating in the committees to gain experience," said Osoro. Emase will now be serving at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chaired by Butere MP Tindi Mwale. She will take up the position formerly occupied by Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku. Another of Ruku's previous positions that has been taken up is that at the Trade committee, which will henceforth be occupied by Taveta MP John Okano. In the Committee on Powers and Privileges, Jane Njeri will replace the Hon John Bwire. Njeri's position in the Committee on National Cohesion will be taken up by Kiambu Women representative Anne Muratha.
