U.S. Embassy launches American Corner Mtaani to drive innovation

U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman. [Collins Oduor, Standard] The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi is seeking to foster innovation through the launch of American Corner Mtaani at the Kenya National Library Service (KNLS). This marks the sixth addition to its network of American Corners in Kenya, joining established locations in Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa and Lamu. American Corner Mtaani aims to be a hub for collaboration among young Kenyan entrepreneurs and start-ups. The facility is supported by a $70,000 investment from the United States in partnership with KNLS. Ambassador Meg Whitman, who spoke at the launch, noted that the expanded network of American Corners reflects a commitment to enhancing people-to-people partnerships made during Kenya's State Visit in May. "American Corner Mtaani is here to support Kenya's young people in bringing their innovation to life," said Whitman. "Let's open the doors and enable the greatest minds to take the Silicon Savannah to the next level. This space is a greenhouse for creativity, learning and dialogue." Shakaria Buckson, the embassy's regional public engagement specialist overseeing American Corners across East Africa, stated that the facility will serve individuals from all backgrounds. "We want to meet people where they are and enable them to access resources and training to move closer to their career goals and aspirations," noted Buckson. "I believe that many of my country's greatest innovators, artists and change-makers were shaped not by elite institutions but from having opportunities at the grassroots level to experiment and learn. American Corner Mtaani is designed for Kenyans who carry this same vision." The new American Corner will provide the local community with access to various U.S. resources, including digital databases, speakers and educational materials. It will host programmes focusing on the creative economy, entrepreneurship, leadership, technology and cultural exchanges. "The foundation of this collaboration is the belief that everyone should have equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities. American Corner Mtaani is concrete proof of our nation's dedication to supporting its citizens," said Dr. Charles Nvizo, CEO of KNLS. American Corner Mtaani will operate Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m except during holidays. The centre will offer cultural programmes covering entrepreneurship, health and education, led by American and Kenyan experts. It will provide a Makerlab experience to explore technology and bring ideas to life. The eLibraryUSA will offer a digital collection of trusted resources, including top newspapers, magazines, journals and dissertations. Visitors will have access to free Internet and Kanopy Films, providing access to hundreds of documentaries across various genres. At the same time, the centre will offer information on U.S. colleges and universities, providing comprehensive details about U.S. higher education.
