NTSA: Pedestrians, riders make majority of road crash deaths

Almost 4, 000 people died in road accidents in the month of October 2022, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) says.

This is an increase of 191 victims from last year October's fatalities (3, 733).

According to a report released by NTSA on Thursday, November 17, the majority of road users who lost their lives were pedestrians and motorcyclists.

"In October 2022, pedestrians (1413), motorcyclists (1,046), passengers (693), pillion passengers (363), drivers (356) and pedal cyclists (53) died,"

In the report, some 17, 550 people were involved in road accidents across the country last month alone.

Of this, (7,982) sustained serious injuries while (5, 644) had slight injuries after the road accidents.

This is an increase from last year's same period when only 16, 642 people were involved in a road crash. This is an increase of 908.

Between January 1 and September 26, 2022, Kenya recorded a total of 15,924 road accidents.

That was according to data published by the National Police Service.

Data released indicated that 3,541 of the accident victims (22.2 per cent) died, 7,236 were seriously injured (45.4 percent) and 5,147 were slightly injured (32.3 per cent).

In that period, 1,269 pedestrians died. Nine hundred and forty-one (941) were motorcyclists, passengers were 634, drivers (324), pillion passengers (324), and pedal cyclists (49).
