Leaders pledge to rally fighting communities embrace peace

Leaders have called for concerted efforts to unite warring communities in the county.

The officials spoke yesterday as the world marked International Peace Day.

The county recently hit headlines after suspected bandits invaded the area, killing eight people, including two police officers and forcing hundreds out of their homes.

More than 500 livestock have been stolen in the last month.

Speaking in Rumuruti town, Governor Ndiritu Muriithi said he would lead a team of community elders to sensitise the locals on living peacefully.

"I will personally be responsible for these peace meetings. I cannot sit back and watch as my people are killed by bandits," he said.

Muriithi said his administration was working closely with the national government to ensure peace is restored in the area. Among the areas affected are Ol Moran, Wangwaci, Matwiku, Survey and Kamwenje.

Newly appointed County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri told parents to take their children to school as peace has been restored.
